How to Make Fire Starters from Leftover Wax

Every candlemaker ends up with the same problem: jars of wax too small to pour, wick trimmings, test burns gone wrong. Don’t throw it away — turn it into fire starters that actually sell.

What you’ll need

  • Leftover wax — any kind, any scent, any color
  • Cardboard egg cartons (not foam or plastic)
  • Dryer lint, shredded paper, or wood shavings
  • A wax melter or pouring pot
  • Scissors or a knife
Safety: Melt wax with low, indirect heat and never leave it unattended. Pick out any metal wick tabs or sustainer clips from your scraps first — they don’t belong in a fireplace.

Steps

1. Save your scraps

Keep a dedicated “scrap jar” at your workstation. Toss in wax shavings, the last half-inch of test candles, drips from the pouring pot, and failed batches. Different colors and scents can all go in together — nobody cares what a fire starter smells like.

Tip: This is also where spilled wax from cleaning your tools goes. Wipe it into the scrap jar instead of the trash — see our cleaning tools tutorial.

2. Fill the egg carton cups

Cut the lid off a cardboard egg carton and pack each cup about two-thirds full with dryer lint, shredded paper, or wood shavings. The cardboard and the filler are the fuel — the wax just holds it together and slows the burn.

3. Melt the wax

Melt your scraps on low heat until fully liquid. Don’t worry about exact temperatures — just get it pourable. Strain out any wick bits or debris with an old spoon as it melts.

4. Pour and cool

Pour the melted wax over each filled cup until the filler is saturated and a thin layer pools on top. Let the whole carton cool completely — a couple of hours at room temperature, or 30 minutes in the fridge.

Don’t rush it: Warm fire starters feel firm on top but stay gooey underneath. If the cups feel soft or bendy, give them more time.

5. Cut apart and package

Cut or tear the carton into individual cups. Each one is a single-use fire starter: set it under your kindling and light the cardboard edge. To sell them, bag 6 or 12 in a cellophane bag with a kraft tag — they’re a perfect low-priced add-on next to your candles at markets.

Tip: One egg carton makes 12 starters from wax you were going to throw away. At $1–2 each, that’s found money from your scrap jar.
