How to Make Body Oils: A Beginner’s Guide

Body oils are one of the simplest products a maker can add — no lye, no heat, no cure time. Just quality carrier oils, skin-safe fragrance, and a good bottle. Here’s how to make them right.

What you need

  • Carrier oil(s) — the base of your product (see the comparison below)
  • Skin-safe fragrance oil or essential oil — must be approved for leave-on skin use
  • Vitamin E oil (optional) — 0.5% extends shelf life as an antioxidant
  • Glass bottles — amber or cobalt with a pump, dropper, or disc cap
  • Small funnel, beaker, and stir rod

Beginner pick: start with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba. They’re stable, nearly odorless (so they won’t fight your fragrance), and absorb well without feeling greasy.

The basic formula

Body oils are simple — typically 1–3% fragrance in carrier oil. That’s much lower than candles because the product sits directly on skin all day.

  1. Measure your carrier oil into a beaker. For a 4 oz bottle: about 3.8 oz of carrier oil.
  2. Add fragrance at 1–3%. For 4 oz at 2%: 0.08 oz (about 2.4 ml, or roughly 48 drops).
  3. Add vitamin E if using — 0.5% of total.
  4. Stir gently for 30 seconds until fully blended.
  5. Funnel into bottles, cap, and label.

Safety rules (don’t skip these)

  • Check the IFRA certificate for every fragrance — confirm it’s approved for leave-on body products (Category 4) at your usage rate. Candle-safe does NOT mean skin-safe.
  • Stay at or under 3% fragrance unless the IFRA docs specifically allow more for that oil.
  • Essential oils need extra care — many have very low skin-safe limits (cinnamon bark, clove, and lemongrass can be sensitizers). Always check.
  • Phototoxic oils (some citrus oils, especially bergamot) can cause burns in sunlight. Use bergaptene-free versions for body products.
  • Label with full ingredients using standard (INCI) names, plus your business name and net weight.

MoCRA note: body oils are cosmetics under federal law. If you sell them, the MoCRA guide applies — including the small-business exemption most makers qualify for.

Blend ideas to start with

  • Calm: lavender + chamomile + vanilla (2%)
  • Glow: sweet orange + ylang ylang + jojoba base (1.5%)
  • Cozy: sandalwood + amber + vanilla (2%)
  • Fresh: eucalyptus + peppermint + grapeseed base (1%)

Fragrance percentages are general guidelines — always follow the IFRA certificate for your specific oil, which overrides any recipe. When in doubt, use less.
