Safety in your workspace

  • Never leave melting wax unattended. Wax can go from liquid to flash fire faster than you think.
  • Use a thermometer. Know your wax’s flash point and never heat wax near it. Most candle waxes flash above 300°F — stay well below.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby — and know how to use it. Baking soda works on small wax fires; never use water on a wax or oil fire.
  • Pour carefully. Hot wax causes serious burns. Wear closed-toe shoes and consider heat-resistant gloves.
  • Ventilate. Fragrance oils are concentrated — work in a ventilated space, especially when pouring large batches.
  • Keep kids and pets out of the pouring area.
  • Clean spills promptly. Wax on floors is a slip hazard; fragrance oil on skin should be washed off.
Water + wax fire = disaster. Water sinks under burning wax, flashes to steam, and throws flaming wax everywhere. Smother it or use an extinguisher.

Safety for your customers

Share these with every buyer — print them on a card, put them on your label, post them in your shop:

  • Trim the wick to 1/4″ before every burn.
  • Burn no more than 4 hours at a time. Let it cool before relighting.
  • Keep away from drafts, vents, fans, and open windows.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended — not even “just for a minute.”
  • Keep away from kids, pets, curtains, and anything flammable.
  • Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Stop using it when 1/2 inch of wax remains — the glass can overheat.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris.

Labeling

  • Include basic burn instructions and warnings on every candle you sell or gift.
  • Standard safety symbols (flame, “keep away from children,” etc.) are expected by customers and retailers.
  • If you sell wholesale or online across state lines, check labeling requirements — they vary.

How long can you safely burn a candle?

No more than 4 hours at a time. Let it cool completely before relighting.

Why do I need to trim the wick?

A long wick produces a larger, unstable flame that causes sooting, smoking, and uneven burning. Trim to 1/4 inch before every burn.

When should I stop burning a candle?

Stop when 1/2 inch of wax remains. Burning further can overheat the container.
