How to Make Car Freshies
Aroma bead freshies are the impulse buy of the fragrance world — cheap to make, fun to design, and they sell everywhere candles do. No wax, no wick, just beads, scent, and heat.

What you’ll need
- Unscented aroma beads (the absorbent plastic beads made for freshies)
- Fragrance oil — freshies use a LOT, roughly 1 oz per cup of beads
- Silicone molds or metal cookie cutters in fun shapes
- Mica powder or dye for color (optional)
- Oven or toaster oven, baking sheet, parchment paper
- Ribbon, twine, or elastic cord for hanging
- Resealable bags or jars for curing
Steps
1. Scent the beads
Put your aroma beads in a glass jar, add fragrance oil (about 1 oz per cup of beads), and shake well. Add mica now if you want color — a little goes a long way. Seal the jar.

2. Let them absorb
Shake the jar once or twice a day for 3–7 days. The beads swell as they drink up the oil. They’re ready when no liquid pools at the bottom and every bead looks plump and evenly colored.
3. Fill the molds
Line a baking sheet with parchment. Set your molds or cookie cutters on it and fill each one with scented beads, mounding them slightly — they shrink as they bake. Poke a hole near the top with a skewer for the hanging string.

4. Bake low and slow
Bake at 300–325°F, checking every 5 minutes. The beads melt together into a solid shape — usually 10–20 minutes depending on thickness. Pull them when the beads have fused but before they brown.
5. Cool, string, and sell
Let them cool completely in the molds, then pop out and thread your ribbon through the hole. Freshies keep their scent for weeks in a car. Package in cellophane bags so customers can smell them on the shelf.
